On Home Schooling

Many practitioners of the Art of the Wise and those involved with what are considered left-hand-path religions face Tempest Smithpersecution and discrimination. This can be bad enough for adults to deal with, and presents very daunting issues for children.

Tempest Smith, pictured here, was only 12 years old when she took her own life in early 2001. She was - by all accounts - a powerful practitioner of the Art. The others in her Jr. High School made fun of her clothing style (dark), her mannerisms (she was shy), and her faith (Wicca). This was a truly awful tragedy. She should have been free to live her life as she desired without being tormented by others.

Our order believes in religious freedom in allowing others to worship whatever they choose to worship or follow, in whatever ways they deem necessary, and expect others to allow us the same. Sadly, even those that follow other religions that profess the same belief often do not adhere to those beliefs in their daily lives. Their children are often among the worst at singling out those that believe or behave differently.

We believe that families should be free to make whatever educational decisions their circumstances and consciences dictate to them - including the ability to withdraw their children from public/government schools and either place them in private institutions of learning, or to educate them within the walls of their own homes free from governmental restrictions and regulations.

In most states in the USA, it is possible for families to home school, and we encourage and support any such efforts. In Utah and Nevada you simply need to provide the school notification in writing of your intent to do so. You do NOT need to be a certified teacher. There are resources and organizations that can provide information and assistance.

For more information on home schooling in Utah, you may visit http://www.uhea.org/. In Nevada you can visit http://nevadahomeschoolnetwork.com/.

We desire that the children of all of those in our order, and indeed all children everywhere, may select the best educational methods and options for their needs.

So mote it be.
